I remember seeing this because my sister's friend was on a "girl movie" kick (think stuff like Bring it on), and she rented this one because it looked in that vein. Totally came out of left field for all of us, but super enjoyable.

"It feels illegal for me to have my eyes open right now" - girl I about fell over! 🤣 Us Deafies don't close our eyes when someone is praying at a table ... it always feels sacrilegious to watch ... but HOW DO YOU KNOW when the prayer is over, and what was even SAID if you don't SEE their lips stop moving!? And no sweaty palm-holding, neither... can't sign along and hold hands! As a religious-adjacent person (not religious, but supportive and close with many people who are), and Deaf ... it's always an interesting experience! I can at least say that much! Tried it once at a friend's house... closed my eyes and felt a tap-tap... "um, we all started eating already" and everyone was just amused and STARING. Whoo boy that feels even worse!

He did a voiceover of one of the singing & dancing German troops onstage @ 14:19 (and likewise did a voiceover of one of Lily von Shtupp's singing dancers onstage in Blazing Saddles). And as far as why didn't Gene want Mel physically on screen in movies: Gene Wilder trusted Mel Brooks to bring his creative vision to life on screen. Wilder’s confidence in Brooks’ direction and writing led him to not want Brooks to physically appear in their films. Wilder believed that Brooks’ presence would distract from the story and characters, so preventing it would allow the audience to focus on the narrative rather than the director himself. So to summarize, Wilder recognized that Brooks’ presence would tend to overshadow the comedic genius of the characters and situations that they created. By keeping Brooks behind the camera, Wilder ensured that the focus remained on the characters and their interactions, allowing the audience to fully immerse themselves in the story.

Your outro was simply lovely! I love this movie so hard. Of note, Megan's parents are played by Mink Stole and Bud Cort. Stole has been a collaborator with John Waters since his start in the 60s and she's in Hairspray (you should definitely check out Waters' films, you'd LOVE them!); Cort starred in the cult classic May-December friendship story Harold & Maude, which is a movie you MUST watch! Also, the big hairy Bear was played by Richard Moll, who played Bull the Bailiff on Night Court

He misinterpreted both the name, and the meaning of the day. It's been decades since I read it, and I never finished the book ( it wasn't well written), but I think he thought Earthlings worshipped bean plants. (E.T. was a botanist, afterall.)

In 2005, I moved in with some new roommates during an internship, and one of them mentioned her brother worked on movies. She said he mostly worked on indie stuff I wouldn't know, and there was one in particular he hated. I laughed and asked what movie? She said this one, and I squealed that I loved it and ran into my room to grab my DVD. All my new roommates thought I was insane. 😂

Hi! I love this channel so I just wanted to provide some background which I feel gets overlooked when discussing iconic works like this - because they take on a life of it's own and folks become reticent to examine the more problematic areas that occurred in one of their favorite nostalgia films but I feel that's a disservice to all involved. I do think this sort of thing doesn't happen as much as it use to (most likely due to cell phones/social media) but it still most certainly does and that's why I want to talk about how... Kubrick (director) 100000% traumatized Shelly Duvall in filming this movie. In fact, it is one of the biggest issues I have with this movie (if not THE biggest). And I know it's not sexy to have a critique about ethics in art and its creation/creator but here we are. Kubrick bullied and gaslit Duvall into her state at the end of the movie to "help" with the authenticity and "getting a good performance out of his actors". He did this from the jump and throughout filming. Basically the last half of the movie: She is not acting. That is a woman BROKEN over MONTHS of films with a demon (Kubrick). And here's WHY it IS a problem: acting is...acting. PRETEND. They are just pretending. It should ALWAYS be PRETEND. NO actor should EVER feel like their life and sanity is threatened DURING filming because it is a J.O.B. Period. Would that behavior be acceptable in ANY other job? No. And that's my point. If Kubrick felt Duvall wasn't a good enough actor, then HE should have re-casted. (Easy fix #1) Or gotten her acting lessons if he HAD to have her "look" (Easy fix #2) Kubrick should take lessons on how to communicate and work with actors (easy fix #3) - none of these involve gaslighting or emotional damaging or causing trauma to another human who is just doing their job. It is this kind of LAZY filmmaking, not thinking outside of the box, and toxic masculinity that works its way into art spaces and creates this FALSE idea that artists has to SUFFER for "good" or "great" or "excellent" art. I have no idea if anyone spoke out against his actions or behavior but my guess, that fact that he was stanley kubrick and was the writer and director...in the 80s? not likely. And THAT is BULLSHITE. I don't want THAT kind of art. I want art were ALL the creatives feel in control on what and how they contribute to that creation. Kubrick STOLE Duvall's agency and how she wanted to portray that character. All this just shows me that, yes, Kubrick has talent and skills - no one is denying that. But it also illustrates how HORRIBLE and shit of director he was that he couldn't get a performance out of his cast and felt the ONLY way to do it was to mentally damage and scare EMPLOYEES (actors) working under him. Directors ARE NOT gods gifts to hollywood or to us. They are LITERALLY JUST project managers. F8CK all that. It is one thing providing tangible props, costumes, sets to allow the actors to more easily immerse themselves in a world - all of that IS helpful. It's why there's this big push AWAY from green screen - it's harder acting to nothing. BUT putting your actors not only in a hostile work environment but also in a state that is EXACTLY like the character and they are feeling genuinely threatened regardless of when the cameras are one - THAT is the opposite of helpful. That is should have been a lawsuit. Also - It was Stanley freaking Kubrick vs Shelly Duvall - what an absolute abuse of his power, position, and authority. I share this because it's been 40 years and yes, I do think there are aspects that are better but we as audiences need to be more critical of HOW the art we consume was created.

Agree %100 this is a great fun film and your delighted appreciation is dear never mind your inclusiveness. You're how the whole world should be. BTW, you should know Cathy Moriarty, who played the camp's "hostess," made her big mark as Jake La Motta's wife in Scorsese's Raging Bull. But since that was wa-a-a-ay back in 1980, it's understandably outside your wheelhouse, as they say. Thank you for this scrumptious appreciation of this cult classic.

I think that the kissing was done so over-the-top as a way to show how disgusting she found kissing a man was. In reality it would have been normal kissing.
